Air Travel Vocabulary Interactive Game

I decided to create this game when I had a memory lapse earlier today, and I couldn't remember the word 'hold', meaning the compartments in aircraft (also ships and buses) designed to hold your luggage and other cargo. Isn't it just embarrassing and frustrating when that happens in class?

Tagxedo Word Cloud

Beam up the Tagxedo word cloud. Click image to enlarge. Elicit words related to Christmas. Ask students to explain the connection. Get them to construct sentences with the words. Have a game - split into groups. The group which creates the most number of correct sentences wins. Award special prizes for the funniest sentence, the longest sentence, etc. If they can't see the words well, it's no problem - have them come closer to take a look. Movement gets the brain cells working!

Beam this one up, and elicit the song before you play it!

See who sings the loudest - the boys vs the girls, the left half of the class vs the right half, those born in the 1st 6 months of the year vs those in the 2nd half, etc.

Word Search

I'd prepared an online word search - I'm not going to do an offline version as I think they are a waste of time and paper - but, unfortunately, I have been unable to get the files hosted anywhere. If you're interested in doing it digitally in class, email me and I can send you the files.

Word Formation

Write the words CHRISTMAS TREE on the board. Ask them to form words. Get them to come up and write them down, several students at the same time. Keep it snappy!

Stocking Filler
Club Pack of 24 Santa, Angel and Snowman Theme Christmas Stockings   Plush Christmas Stocking

Split class into groups. Have as many stockings as groups. In each stocking fill it with all kinds of goodies and classroom objects. Remember that they will be handling the stockings quite roughly - I've used cheap stockings before and they didn't last two gropes before they started to tear, revealing some of the objects!

The aim of the game is for them to guess as many of the objects as possible. The group with the most number of correct guesses wins. In reality, all of them win as you will be sharing out the goodies among them!

At a Hotel

Last year, I published a game on a hotel reception dialogue. The file hosting site I used for the game had lost or deleted it since. So, I decided to redo it slightly, added a vocabulary question, and here it is.

Remember that for this quiz, if you provide your email address, the results (and the correct answers) will be sent to you. However, sometimes, the automatic emailing system does not work. If this is the case, I'd appreciate your letting me know.

Images from Mallorca Part 5 (of 5)

Part Five, the final part: Shots of wealthy Port Andratx, and yet another enchanting mountain village, Estellencs. We arrived here quite late in the evening, so we stayed for dinner. There are a few hotels which looked quite good, so it must attract its fair share of visitors. It feels like a great place to stay if you're looking for some peace and quiet. As with a lot of Mallorcan villages, it is a maze of narrow cobbled alleys lined with pretty yellow stone houses. There is a track which leads down to the beach, which we, obviously, didn't take!

I hope you've enjoyed these photos, a selection from some 500+ shots I took. Unfortunately, I only have a point-and-shoot Lumix, so I had little control over speed/aperture settings. If you would like a copy of the original high resolution shots, email me.

Images from Mallorca Part 4

Part Four: This route takes us down the scenic west coast from popular San Vicenç through spiritual Lluc onto touristy Soller, ending on two strikingly picturesque villages, Deiá and Valledemossa. Oh, and I threw in some Es Trenc sunset shots from the day before.

Part Three: The Battle of the Moors and the Christians, Pollença village

Legend has it that on 30th May 1550, the fearsome pirate, Dragut Rais attempted to attack Pollença. Local hero, Joan Mas, went running through the narrow alleys, warning everyone of the imminent danger. They then bravely fought and won the ensuing battle.

Since mid-nineteenth century, the mock battle between Moors and Christians was incorporated into the annual patron saint celebrations. The Christians, dressed in white, and the Moors, in colourful pirate gear, marched along the narrow cobbled alleys of Pollença, banging their poles and firing their rifles. As they moved, crowds from adjoining streets merged into the procession as they snaked slowly along.

Imagine thousands of people crammed into these streets, barely two-car wide, and you can envisage a rather claustrophobic situation. But, thankfully, everyone was in friendly spirits, and kept the celebrations lively and colourful.

A word of caution: if you ever find yourself in one of these processions, you'd be wise to position yourself near a side alley, where you can easily escape should the need arise. Otherwise, you'd be caught up in the throng and would be pushed along, whether you like it or not!

At the Airport: Putting Dialogue in Sequence, Matching, Jigsaw

online at the airport check-in passport control quiz jigsaw puzzle
My original posts on dialogue at the airport check-in and at the passport control have been rather popular, so I decided to improve them slightly here.

They have been combined into one quiz, and a matching vocabulary exercise has been added, too.

If you provide a valid email address, the results of the quiz along with the correct answers will be sent to it automatically.

Both the dialogues can be used as a guide for role-playing activities in the classroom. In role-playing activities, always encourage students to be adventurous in changing parts of the dialogue to suit their own circumstances.

Merry Christmas to the World!

To all those who have been through here these past six months, I would like to say thank you!

To all those who will be coming in the future, I would also like to say thank you!

To all my colleagues and peers who haven't been here, or who haven't found anything of interest, I will strive to change your mind.

To all my students, I would like to think I have been of help, be it slight or great, and to say to you 'Never give up!'

May you all have a wonderful Christmas, and may the New Year bring fresh challenges, new hopes and dreams, and lots of peace and happiness!
